What is a Marriage Mentor?

A marriage mentor at BelPres is:

  • A brain to pick (imparts knowledge and shares experiences)
  • An ear to listen (empathetic and non-judgmental)
  • A push in the right direction (encouragement, and occasionally a kick in the pants)

If you’ve been married so long you’ve lost track of which anniversary is coming up—chances are you have some experience in the marriage department! You’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, how to communicate, how to get through conflict, and how to love someone unconditionally. Imagine how your experience could benefit a newlywed couple who is having trouble figuring out how to do all of these things. This couple could use your encouragement and benefit from what you’ve learned along the way.

Who can be Marriage Mentors?
Any couple can apply to be a mentor in our program.  Please complete the Interest Form on this page. Mentors are not expected to have a perfect marriage—just a committed marriage.

Will any couple who applies become a mentor?
Not necessarily. There is a qualification process of potential mentors to make sure mentors are in a good season in their own marriage journey to serve as mentors.  We also have a suggested self evaluation you can take on your own by clicking here

How much will training cost to become a Certified Marriage Mentor?
There is no cost to become a Certified Marriage Mentor.  There is a cost of time, however.  We ask that both spouses read a book which we provide to you. The title of the book is The Complete Guide to Marriage Mentoring by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott.  Final commitment to the program is not required until after you have read the book and discerned whether you are ready to step into a marriage mentoring role.  We provide ongoing training and morale events for all marriage mentors.

Are mentors professional counselors?
No. They are not the equivalent of professional or licensed marriage counselors. They are simply trained couples who are passionate about enriching marriages by walking alongside other married couples, while offering leadership and tested advice. However, Marriage Mentors are trained in how to spot red flags when professional counseling is needed.
