Title:  That Was Then This is Now:  Historical Fiction and the Persistence of Culture.

Books:    Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott
Beloved, by Toni Morrison
Angle of Repose, by Wallace Stegner

Description: Fiction that is set in a bygone historical era usually says more about the contemporary culture of the author than of the characters in the story.  Using these three books we will talk about how issues like marriage, generational conflict, race, and politics can sometimes be better understood by examining them in the past as a means to better understanding our present circumstances.

“Our Story- God’s Story”

“This is what it looks like to be human beings. In the reading, as we submit our lives to what we read, we find that we are not being led to see God in our stories but to see our stories in God’s. God is in the larger context and plot in which our stories find themselves.” Eugene Peterson

Join women of every life-stage as we explore 1 & 2 Samuel and share life together. Large lecture format followed by intimate table group discussion. Grow in faith and community in a laid-back, multi-generational study.

Every several weeks we put our faith in action by hosting a brunch for the students and staff of Eastside Academy.
