I love being a part of BelPres church. My wife, Susan, and I have been attending this church since 1987. I have been on staff as Chief Business Guy (CBG) since 2012.

Before I became CBG I had a fun career at Microsoft which included work in the Pacific Rim and Europe. I left Microsoft in 2010 to sail, with Susan, around the Pacific Ocean for a couple summers (destinations included Maui and Alaska). Then, one spring day, Scott Dudley tapped me on the shoulder after a worship service and asked what I was going to do next. I asked what he had in mind. He said he would like to talk with me about the CBG role. I got a big smile on my face because, just the night before, we had prayed for guidance on what God had in mind for the next chapter of our lives. After 25 years of a using the gift God has given me, from small business to Microsoft, Scott Dudley was asking me to use these gifts and learnings for BelPres!

It was an easy decision to join the staff of BelPres. I love it when God makes choices very clear.

Karen felt a strong call to this aspect of youth ministry and God worked out all the details in providing a partner and clearing the hurdles for the first job share within our church. Years later she is now the lead admin of the two 30+ hour/week admins who support all of Family Life Ministries from birth through high school! Karen still has a real heart for the families of our church and feels God has enabled her to serve them behind-the-scenes by taking care of the details of this ministry. Karen and her husband live in Bellevue and Karen enjoys gardening and cooking in her spare time. She loves to dance and move and her classroom is full of exploration, wonder and a bit of silliness.  She found her true calling back in 1995 when she began working with toddlers through the BCC Parent Education Program. When Bellevue Presbyterian Church opened its Preschool in 1999, Mrs. Debbie eagerly joined the staff, instructing the three year olds and has loved teaching here ever since. She feels particularly blessed to be able to share in the lives of these children as they grow, learn and develop, but also to show God’s love through the curriculum.  Mrs. Debbie lives in Bellevue with her husband, has 2 young adult children, and a very precious grandson.

Before joining the BelPres staff, I served as a leader of volunteer leaders with community organizations developing and implementing volunteer systems. Over those 15 years I established best practices and tools for volunteer management and am happy to bring this experience to BelPres. As director of GetConnected, I am honored to collaborate with BelPres ministries and community partners and to match individuals called with their best service opportunity fit. It is a joy to be where our volunteers are greatly valued and to work together to serve where God is sending us.

Our family has been a part of the BelPres community since 2000. You’ll often find my husband, Dan, in a neon jacket directing traffic on Sunday mornings. Our 3 children have graduated from college and are living and working in the area. We recently downsized to a home just two miles from the church, but we are still finding new homes for 35 years of family “stuff”.

I often land in leadership positions and have learned that successfully fulfilling God’s purpose requires ongoing learning and professional development. As part of our Leadership Development Team, I am thrilled to be the staff leader for the Global Leadership Summit hosted here at BelPres. Having attended the Summit for five years, I await anxiously for each year’s dose of inspiration and skills.

Karen Nelson has worked here since 1996. She moved here from California where she had the following experiences:
· Began a career in opera, but left it to do all the other stuff listed below.
· Taught music in Los Angeles inner-city elementary schools (and two private schools) for 9 years.
· Worked for the Orange County Performing Arts Center to produce the world’s largest children’s art festival for over 900,000 participants. Five times.
· Had a 180-member children’s choir, took them to Knott’s Berry Farm for their end of year outing and got the worst sunburn of her life.

Now that she lives in Maple Valley and works at the church, she:
· Conducts the 2nd-4th grade choir, JoySong, at BelPres.
· Helps Scott Dean manage the daily details of Music and Worship.
· Supports the Sanctuary Choir, SDG, and the children’s choirs.
· Supports all the volunteer groups that support weekly worship at BelPres.
· Writes poetry and articles about life and faith.
· Rides a recumbent bike very, very badly.
· Is thinking of writing and performing a one-woman show in the next five years.
· Or a book of poetry.
· Or both.

I am a writer, director, cinematographer and editor, with a passion to create visual art that brings glory to God. With a Master’s degree from SPU in Education in the Visual Arts, I also enjoy helping others explore their creative vision. In my down time, you may find me playing games with friends, gardening, puzzling, painting, or taking my chunky dog for a walk with my wonderful husband. I also love to travel and have been so fortunate to have had some fabulous adventures throughout the world. If I could have one superpower it would be to fly. Unfortunately I haven’t had a nuclear, cosmic accident yet where I would receive that power. In the meantime, I’ve tried anything close to “flying” (skydiving, hang gliding, paragliding, etc). Every day I get to work with an awesome team of talented people. To see some of our productions, check out BelPres Studios.

Graduated from the “School of Hard Knocks” back at the turn of the century with a video camera in my hand. I started filming weddings ’cause they’ve got delicious food, fun people, and I discovered that I really love filming live events. So I decided to use my talents for Jesus and brought them to BelPres. I’m a musician, filmmaker, and a people person, sometimes I like long walks on the beach and other times I like shorter walks. Thanks for reading my bio!
